I am a new user of 5.6.1 and will be using your CMS for many purposes including stores.  I would like to know to prepare in advance for the eventual upgrade.  Are upgrades incremental, do they delete new folders that have been added such as image folders?  Is there a best practices document for customization?  Thanks.

All DNN upgrades are incremental and are performed by unzipping upgrade package into the DNN installation folder. All previously existing DNN files will be overwritten, please stand away from modifying core files.

Hello Sebastian, yes I agree with that, although a programmer that is my intention.  So, my additional folders and 3rd party extensions and skins will not be bothered.  And if there is structural change to the database instructions will be provided? Is there a best practices document?  As this is a new installation, any words of advice since you are moving to C#, such as potential database changes.

Simple answer here: do not change core db structure and do not modify DNN core code.
Otherwise you have chance to loose your modifications after upgrade.

All other is allowed: create custom modules, skins, new folders, new tables and relationships. Upgrade will work there without any problems.
