I'm looking to upgrade my site from 5.6.2 to 6.x in the next few weeks and was wondering if:
  1. Anyone has performed the upgrade yet, if so how long did it take you and what problems did you encounter?
  2. I'd like to upgrade to the C# version but have several modules written in VB and don't have time to convert them over yet.  Is it possible to run those modules in VB and others in C# at the same time?
    1. Is it possible to perform an update on the VB version with the C# code or would it have to be a full install/reconfigure of the C# code?  If a full install, can I export/import my current site settings so I don't have to spend hours changing them again? (sorry, been a while since I did all the configuring).

Thanks

The upgrade should be relatively straightforward.

Use the 6.01 upgrade package.

Make a backup of your database and web directory first.

There are no issues with language.

If your custom modules were created using good practices, they should work just fine.

I'd recommend that you take the backup, install it locally, and do the upgrade on your local environment. Then, when it has been upgraded you can move the upgraded system to your production server.

Shouldn't take more than an hour, so set a couple of hours aside since you're a bit rusty.

There will be no need to reinstall.

Thanks for the info Joe.  I remember it taking about an hour last time I did an upgrade but that's been back at version 4.6 or so.

So you're saying if I want to move the core from to C# from VB, I would still be able to use the upgrade package, correct?  I do remember now, the website working with modules in VB or C# without a problem (web.config modification if I remember right).

Yes, just use the upgrade package, copy all of it's files on top of your existing web directory and then browse to the site.

The requirement to edit web.config has been gone since 4.6.2.

Assuming that you don't have any problems, this should be a real snap.  If you do have problems, upgrading on a copy of your site will save you a lot of heartache!
