I need to upgrade DotNetNuke on my production-server.
Therefor I want my two websites to appear offline during maintenance. When the upgrade is done, I'd like to test my websites first, before they go back online again. On my development-server some features of the website were different in the new DotNetNuke-version. (For instance the classname of the LogIn-module.)

How can I first test my website in the new DotNetNuke-version without it being online for the whole world to see?

Are you using IIS? You could go to Authentication and disable anonymous authentication and enable basic authentication so you'd need to enter a username and password to view your website.

Could also do the same with .htaccess and .htpasswd files.

To pile onto Dane's idea....I have use IP restrictions to block everything to the site except my IP address (in IIS). You can go as far as creating a custom 403 page to alert users.
