An update of my upgrade journey to DNN6 :)

I got 5.2.3 now allowing me to login after I removed some MagicAjax stuff from the web.config file. Can I assume that this is a 3rd party module and that I have to update the entries in the web.config file accordingly? I also copied the <httpModules> and <httpHandlers> sections from the install package's web.config file, because they were differing.

The only obvious problem is that the pane with "Add Page", "Add Module" and so on, is still visible even for unauthenticated / non-admin users. But if attempting to use it, the user gets forwarded to the login page.

am removing all unused modules now. good that DNN5 easily shows which modules are in use and one does not have to use SQL queries for that any more. :)

Oh no....removing all unused modules killed the server again. Many uninstall scripts were reporting errors. I guess many modules were removed the fast, uncoventional and wrong way by simply deleting the files from the disk. :(

Rolling back to 4.9.5 to validate if I can reproduce the successfull update to 5.2.3....

I have those stepts to get from 4.9.5 to 5.2.3:
1. Upgrade mladvannouncement 1.x to newer version 2.x, otherwise it will crash right away on the first page as this module does not work anymore
2. Run the DNN upgrade
3. copy \bin\providers ->\bin (i read this somewhere and otherwise it did not work)
4. install the new web.config file with the changes mentioned previously
5. delete system.web.extensions.dll as this is now part of the .NET 3.x framework
6. Open up the web site

The following issues do remain:
1. However, the CATALOOK module does not work anymore and has to be upgraded -> Maybe this can be taken care of later after upgrading to DNN6
2. The Host menu has lost the icons somehow, they point to some path https://www.mysite.com/Portals/0/icon_filemanager_16px.gif. On the live 4.7.3 system they do point to https://www.mysite.com/images/icon_filemanager_16px.gif -> Not a show stopper
3. The site still shows the "Add Page", "Add Module", ... pane, which is only present after admin authentication on the live site -> Don't have a clue why this is happening

Should I now try to move on from this point?

Do I have to worry about 3. and the pane showing up? Is this maybe just a setting in the web.config or the database that has been lost somehow?

I am astonished that I did get that far with only upgrading one module...

Kind Regards / Andy

Upgrading to 5.2.3 -> 5.4.4 and 5.4.4 -> 5.6.8 both worked well. Only had to replace the older telerik.web.ui.dll located in the bin directory with the one from the install package.

The upgrade to 6.2.2 did not require any changes to any files.

I lost my skin, because the site is using the catalook skin switcher which was not working with DNN6 anymore in its installed version.

After installing the newest catalook trial for DNN6 the skin was back working again :) It has lost all the products unfortunately. I guess I will have to talk with the catalook support, maybe there are some steps specific to catalook required to make it work again.

The host and admin menu is entirely gone which eliminates the icon path problem for the menu items. :)

I still have the "Add Module", "Add Page" pane showing up for unauthenticated users.

The skin looks good so far. Some fixes needed regarding the layout of the language switcher and some hyperlinks changed the color from black to blue. Or the search was customized previously on the live site and is now the default search again (allowing searches on the web too).

Looks like I arrived at 6.2.2 :)
