Hi DNN Community,

I am trying to upgrade a server from 04.03.07 to a current version. Unfortunately I do not know a lot about DNN.

I created a test server from a backup where I am trying to find a working path. There is a lot of 3rd party modules installed, for example catalook 05.00.08 and onyak sigmalive (the two most important ones).

I tried the following so far:
04.03.07 ->    04.04.01 (Successful)
04.04.01 ->    04.06.02 (Successful)
04.06.02 ->    04.09.05 (Successful)
04.09.05 ->    05.04.04 (Many Problems)

So then I decided to rollback and try again upgrading 04.09.05 to 06.01.00.

I had to do some changes in the web config but then I run into this exception:

 I tried copying over the <navigationControl> section from the 06.01.00 DNN installation folder's web.config without success. I tried changing the default navigation provider to SolpartMenuNavigationProvider as well and it did not work either.

 I tried adding this provider:

<add name="DDRMenuNavigationProvider" type="DNNDoneRight.DDRMenu.DDRMenuNavigationProvider, DNNDoneRight.DDRMenu" />

In another attempt I made it the default provider.

Anything I tried so far failed :(

Could anyone please point me into the right direction?

beginning with DNN 4.6.0 upgrades should no longer need manual tweaking of web.config. Did you perform a full backup of files and database prior to each upgrade step?

Thanks for your reply!

I am not 100% sure. I downloaded the upgrade package of each version, copied it into the bin folder and ran the www.site.com/install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade.

Up to 4.9.5 this worked without any visual errors, all steps did show a "Successful" status.

When going from 4.9.5 to any higher version I get some errors while upgrading. This is the result of the upgrade to 6.0.1 for example:

I found another advice you gave on this forum that 5.2.3 might be a next step from 4.9.5 so I rolled back to 4.9.5 and tried that.

And after upgrading the MLAdvAnnouncement module  the front page was loading again :)

The only thing that is not working on the front page is, that it display now the upper pane that is usually only visible for admins. I mean the pane that contains the "Add Page", "Add MOdule" commands and such.

I do now get the following exception when trying to go to the login page:

Looks to me like the LabelControl is not working anymore too.

Unfortunately the site has ~60 modules installed.

I checked the mentioned log file (first error) and it is the result of some ForeignKey "FK_EventLog_EventLogTypes" missing in the database that should be dropped during the upgrade.

I don't know about the error 5.01.00 error for example. Do I have to check some other log files as well?

Oh...didn't quite answer your question regarding the backup.

I am using VMWare Server for this and the limitation of VMWare Server is that you can only have one snapshot at a time. Currently I have a 4.9.5 snapshot only but I could restore the backup again to get back to the 4.3.7 I started with.

I noticed another thing with my current 5.2.3 version.

If I sort the files in the bin folder by date, there is a lot of modules that are still dating back to 2006.

For example:
DotNetNuke.Modules.Gallery.dll
DotNetNuke.Modules.WhatsNew.dll
DotNetNuke.Modules.Store.Providers.dll

There is 46 DotNetNuke.Modules.* files.

Do I have to install those modules somehow manually? Are they part of the upgrade package?
