Dear DNN Experts,
How can one do an in-place upgrade from 8.0.3 to 9.0.2 for a small site?
Can I simply make a backup of my database and perhaps just some local folder (which folder?) and stash them, then run the upgrade in-place on the actual site?
Please advise.
Thanks.

Mark,

I would not recommend to upgrade to DNN 9, at least not at the moment. There are quite a lot of threads here in the forum describing problems, so I would wait a bit.

Anyway, when you do it:

1) Shut down the IIS app pool
2) Backup the database
3) Backup the files (the whole installation directory of DNN), best way by using 7Zip or any other file compression tool
4) Download the upgrade package
5) Unblock the upgrade package (ZIP file)
6) Extract the upgrade package to your DNN installation directory
7) Start the app pool
8) Run the upgrade from a web browser (normally by calling the site, or by calling /install/UpgradeWizard.aspx)

When you want to go back to the previous version, just stop the app pool, delete the files in the install directory and the database, and restore the files and the database from the backups made. Then start the app pool and everything should be turned back.

Happy DNNing!
Michael

Michael,

I appreciate your help.

And, as you suggest, I will wait a bit.

(I am glad that I asked.)

Thanks.

DNN 9.1.0 might be a candidate.

I don't, though, recommend doing an in place upgrade if there is any way to avoid it.

If you choose to do that, though, make darned sure that you have a good database and file backup in case you need to revert!
