Trying to upgrade from 8 to 9.2.2 - can't load any page / start site ...
[FATAL] DotNetNuke.Framework.PageBase - An error has occurred while loading page.
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
   at DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.Skin.GetSkin(PageBase page)
   at DotNetNuke.Framework.DefaultPage.OnInit(EventArgs e)
   at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer)

   at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint)

the skin/container on home page was set to Xcillion in dnn 8
How do I fix this?

The ability to change skin/container has not worked for me for 7 years. Always had to do raw database edit. Not being good at sql, I just edited each cell in db for page skin and container. (copy/paste). I missed the Home page, it still had a version 7 skin and that didn't work.

Next step, upgrade real site, rather than clone

regarding changing control bar to persona bar - why does dnn 'fix' things that ain't broke, rather than fix bugs?

I see on translation page, half the items are blank or not yet available … https://www.dnnsoftware.com/docs/administrators/control-bar-to-persona-bar.html

For new sites, I always ask myself, do I need DNN or can I use html, bootstrap and a few gulp files or can I use Google AMP? But who knows, maybe I'll grow to love 9.2.2

It's very weird that changing skins does not work for you.
In that case I think there might be something wrong with you installation as we have been doing that all the time over the past 7 years..
I do agree that it's strange that certain parts of the DNN UI were not incorporated in the Persona Bar but it should be a lot better in 9.3.2 (I'm not sure how up to date the page is you linked).
I can't think of much that's not in there in it's current state.

Can you explain a bit more on the setting a skin issue?
Do you get an error when you do that?

BTW, this might also be the reason your upgrade does not work.
Did you follow the suggested upgrade path?

The skin just never changed, no error. However, this seems to work in dnn 9
However, clicking on File Manager brings up error Object+reference+not+set+to+an+instance+of+an+object.&content=0
In v7 I believe we had to change the control - they changed the name.
However, in version 9, how do I bring up the Host or Admin pages? So I can add the control?
The Page Manager does not appear to have host or admin pages.
this has multiple sites on 1  instance and it is most likely that I forgot to do this on this one site in v7.
Can we show/edit host pages in dnn 9 or do I need to revert to dnn 7 to fix this? I am logged in as host user.
Does 40 fingers work with dnn 9? I used that for several things.
