I want to connect up my poker blind timer Silverlight app to my DNN database. Basically results will be synched with the leagues on PokerDIY.com. The user will log in to the SL app and their PokerDIY DNN account and it will pull down their leagues and players.

I am trying to decide on the best architecture/technology for this. Do I use normal webservices or RIA?

I control the DNN project and the Silverlight app so they can be tightly coupled - hence RIA sounds like a good match for RAD DNN dev. I am a little confused at exactly how to link a Silverlight app with a RIA project - do I have to make a DNN module that has the RIA web stuff in it and install it as a module? How do I structure it in Visual Studio 2010?

I found an article on DNN Auth and RIA but it's over a year old and RIA webservices have improved a lot since then - is this still valid or are their easier ways? Here is an example for Silverlight 3.

Can someone just describe at a high-level on the architecture of this approach (Michael W?) and how I need to incorporate DNN, RIA webservices, Silverlight and DNN authentication.

TIA!

Another caveat - this is an OOB app...

I just use .asmx web services. If you look at recent Silverlight DNN modules:

You can see this works fine with great performance.

Thanks Michael, is there any reason why you would not use WCF RIA? I haven't really used them besides samples but they seem to be the way forward with Silverlight + web for RAD development (if you have control over all the tiers, like I do). Any comment on how I would set up a RIA/DNN environment? I'm checking out the ExpenseReport now...

Steve Fabian has been able to get DotNetNuke to work with WCF. Whenever I try to make it work I just get tons of problems such as WCF will only work on one address. If a person tries to call www.pokerdiy.com and pokerdiy.com only one will work, the other will silently fail.

I don't need the headache.

Also WCF RIA was meant for normal code behind style of programming. I always use View Model MVVM Silverlight programming. Trying to use MVVM with WCF RIA is doable but challenging for no good reason.

However, with that said. When LightSwitch comes out, it will be worth the trouble. see:
