Hello,

I'm considering using the Repository module to store/list Auction items for a fundraising event for my non-profit client. I don't need payment integration as this auction will be held live (in person).  What we do need are the following features:

  • Each listing requires a title, thumbnail image (and "click on for" a  larger image), category (e.g. Home and Garden, Electronics, etc), and a description of the item which could include a sponsor's logo and link to the sponsor's website.
  • The ability to have event committee members add/edit auction items in real-time (roles)

From what I've read (and yet to experiment with), the Repository's Portfolio skin would appear to be ideal, but I'd be interested in what others think (pros/cons) about this approach.

Thanks,

Jack

Ok, after a little experimenting, I've decided to use the "Slides" respository module for the auction items. Why?

  1. The Slides Repository looks professional with each (auction item) image displayed as a thumbnail slide with a title, and description beside.
  2. I can create a specific (Auction Item Editor) role in a specific (Auction Committee) role group for a registered user/role. This is to allow users designated as "Auction Item Editor" to add (upload), edit, and delete auction item content (only).
  3. Auction Committee staff adding auction items don't have to worry about the size, or sizing of the auction item (image) as this is handled automatically by the Slides Repository.
  4. A thumb-nail image is already supported. A user can "Click For Full View" under the slide to see the larger image file in it's original size as was uploaded.
  5. The Repository supports appropriate auction item "Categories", like "Home & Garden", "Electronics", "Entertainment", etc, so auction items can be nicely categorized and listed in a corresponding Repository Dashboard. So visitors who may be interested in specific auction item categories, for example, "Sports & Sporting Goods", can see just those specific items.
  6. As the respository module content can be syndicated, this may be handy for users wanting to get real-time RSS updates to the auction item content.
  7. The Description field supports hyperlinks to sponsor pages, images, or whatever. The description field allows the auction committee to add text to stimulate interest and ultimately entice visitors to participate in the auction.
  8. The prepopulated 'Author' Name can be overidden to a generic entry, like "Auction Committee" which is displayed (by default) with the slide.
  9. The user adding the auction item can deselect "Show My Email Address" check box.
  10. The Repository can have moderater if this is desirable (mine doesn't as it's a small, close-knit committee).
  11. The Repository module is much more efficient and consistent for the auction event then say a Text/HTML module, as several committee members may need to quickly add/edit auction items simultaneously.

Keep in mind, that this auction is a live, in-person event, so we don't need on-line pay processor integration.  However, the committee really wanted to display the auction items appropriately ahead of time to website visitors versus perhaps just having a text description, and/or a sponsor name/logo.

That's it.

Jack

Steve,

Thank you very much for your offer.

I did encounter a pretty minor issue, and it's cosmetic. I've noticed some whitespace (two thin lines) through the Slide frame sides just below the bottom of the Slide horizontal sections.  This is not a show-stopper for me, and I do have a screen capture snip-it of this, if you'd like to see it.

Jack
