I am a new DNN developer and am having a tough time following the Standard approach to doing some things I would have thought were basic.  For example in DNN5 there was a module called User Defined Table which was then removed (sometime before DNN7) and moved to CodePlex now called Forms and List, where it does not appear then has been updated since early 2014.   Is Forms and List no longer used by DNN developers?  Has everyone moved to a purchased module instead?  If not what should I be looking at?

I will be needing tools like News, Events, Rating, etc. and I am worried that I will find similar situation where support appears to be lagging.

Is everyone simply waiting for DNN8 and the MVC world to catch up?

I know lots of questions, in addition to the specific FnL related stuff I am also looking for feedback on the current health of the DNN developer community?
