When I log in as the moderator and go to the moderators page. The list of forums / posts to moderate is full of (0) zeros and negative numbers which don't seem to have any connection what so ever to the actual contents of the forums

Why would they not be zeros where there is no post to moderate, and/or a positive number indicating how many unapproved posts there are in a given forum?

There is a bug that can offset the posts to moderate count at the forum level. This is why some items will have negative numbers. In the last two versions of the module, I believe it will not show anything in the posts to moderate queue unless that posts to moderate count is > 0. In version 4.4.3 (still in release tracker, no i don't know when it will get passed) the bug has been corrected.
