The search button in these forums does not work with IE or Firefox.  In IE I can only choose a specific forum from the first group.  On firefox I can not choose a forum at all.

That's a known issue and I think it's been fixed or changed in the next release. 

To get around it use IE, click on the down arrow button and then use the arrow keys on your keyboard.

Paul is correct on both. The forum selector is replaced by a treeview that uses the client api and we are working on a new user lookup which uses the client api as well. Both of these operate inline within the page and do not require a popup. We find this to be a vast improvement because this not only works across all browsers (minus lynx and maybe a few other antiques) but it provides a better end user experience.
