I am creating a forum for a public organization. We want everyone to be able to participate in the forum, but we also want to be able for everyone to discern who is a member of the organization, and who is a member of the general public.

There is a site-wide role called "members" that grants acces to certain areas of the site, including members-only threads.

My question: Is it possible to add an icon, or other identifier, like a "Member" string, in the area where the username and avatar are shown based on this role? I realize the avatar could be used for this purpose, but I'd rather leave that for each member to use.

At time not.  Should a Enhancement with System-Avatar by Role solved your problem?  So you can make a Enhancement request to the Gemini on http://support.dotnetnuke.com.  The team will then look to inwork it to the code for one of the next releases.  But this wil not done in short time.

That would be the solution, provided that the system avatar is shown in addition to the user avatar.

I see in Gemini that there is already a similar enhancement request in the pipeline for the Forums module.

Thank you for your answer.
