I have forums up and running on my site and I've been tasked with importing the content from our legacy system into this one.  Before I go through and look at table structures figuring out what maps to what and then writing a sql statement to move content from one system to the other I thought I'd pick your brains here.

Is there an "easier" way to import content from an old system?  Is the route I'm going a good route to take?

Sorry, there is no other way.  There are many different Forums, so that we do not deliver any scripts or imports from other Forum systems.  I think you are on the right way.

Thanks for the update Matthias.  You mean you don't have scripts for every other forum solution out there???

Just kidding.  That would be quite an undertaking that no one in there right mind would do.  I'll stick with my route and get them over.  Thanks again.

I have experience in importing data into the module (as the developer of this module) and I am also very clear on the data structure. While I can't promise to take this task on with you, I can certainly answer any questions you may come across while you go through this. Please feel free to post them here as they come up. Do you plan on writing an application to handle this import process (if you want to move in users, you most likely will need to do this) or do you plan on just using SQL?

I'm not exactly sure on what the Users table does.  I belive it holds info for the users who have posted/read things in the forum and that it pulls user id's from the standard DNN user object.  If that's the case we'll be fine.

The users from the old system don't all exist on our new website so I was planning on migrating all of the posts under one username.  My plan is to Create the Groups and Forums via the module which will update the FORUM_GROUPS and FORUM_FORUMS tables.  Then I will write queries to move the data into the FORUM_THREADS and FORUM_POSTS table.  At the end I'll do some cleanup queries to update the number of threads/posts which is used in the FORUM_FORUMS table.

I'm going to look through all of the forum tables in detail early next week, but those were the foure tables that jumped out at me as needing updating.  I was thinking the users table would be updated on it's own as people start viewing/updating on their own.
