Right now you should use DNN Forums 4 from Codeplex.com, if you start new.

Not the new AF 5 beta (betas usually can't be easily updated to Release versions).

Also holders of the AF 4 will be able to upgrade also.

Some script will be available at the (near ?) future.

 Some questions...

  1. Why DNN forums version 4, since version 5 is out? Are there issues with migrating the forums over to AF?
  2. Will AF 5.0 be free? I am running a free gaming site, and would prefer to use a free forums module.
  3. Will DDN Forums be discontinued?

I have checked out AF before but did no go with it. The free version (AF Lite) only allowed a few groups on only for one portal. This makes DDN Forums more valuable to me.

1. Because BETA versions are not guaranteed to be upgradable (in DNN).

2. Yes AF 5.0 will be open source and free (www.codeplex.com).

3. DNN Forum module IS discontinued a long time ago (a year or more).

Thanks for the update... last time I checked into DNN and its modules was about 2 years ago, so a little behind. Been running a server for about 3 yrs now... flawlessy. Love DNN and its the key to our great website.

I am jumping back in now to setup a new server and move our forums over to the new installation. I am close to having the coding done to migrate the users and the forums over. But after looking into whats going on now. Thought I would ask some questions. I am already using DNN Forums 5+, so I imagine I will need to get a copy of AF and work on moving everything over to it.

That is good news about AF being open source! I liked it but just didnt want to spend the $$

Keep us posted and thx for your input...

I'm following the projects and I'm testing the beta.

Do you have a timeline for next beta release RC and a stable Version?

There is a webinar at September 5th about migrating from Active Social to the social capabilities of DNN. One of the requirements for migrating from AS to DNN is the presence of AF5 in your DNN installation. Therefore I come to the conclusion (untill someone of DNN Corp tells me differently) that AF should be released before that date. This is becasue that I don't expect many people to be willing and migrate to a beta version of Active Forums.

This is just my own conclusion though .......

Marc
