Actually, I ended up changing it back and turning off the navigation in the forum setup.

Not sure if you've tried to click on that link? I've tried it in both IE and FF and the resulting forum is squished onto the right hand side. Is this a browser/setting problem at my end or are other people seeing it as well?

Yes, I tried it just now using IE and it worked fine here.
