Well, I finally had time to test this (it was not ignored but there are only so many hours in a day). This is working as expected.

You need to make sure you have installed the gallery module, then you need to make sure you have configured it from Forum Administration -> Gallery & Smilies. There is a configuraiton wizard to help you along w/ the process.

It's not working as expected - at least not in my case.

I had the gallery working before I set up the forums. I also used the configuration wizard to configure the four galleries for the forums. The behavior I am experiencing is that I can upload avatars (they make it into the gallery, I've checked) but when I choose to select an avatar, none are displayed (it just gives me the upload screen). After I upload an avatar, the box on the user configuration page shows the correct file name of the avatar, but after saving the changes, there is no change in what's displayed for me in the forums. Also, when I go back to the user configuration screen, it shows no avatar for me.

This happens no matter how I'm logged in - even as the host superuser.
