Installing the IIS6 metabase compatibility removed the previous error. But now I get:

This shows on the settings page.

I checked the documentation and tried to run the site using impersonation. I setup the same user used in the AD and the impersonator in web.config, setup permissions for the user in the DNN folder and on the ASP.NET temp folder. but still no luck.

What I'm missing here?

Vicenç, I'm assuming that you did switch the site over to use the classic pipeline correct? You could try the suggestions from the thread that Michael linked to. I didn't send you that way as I thought Dan's way worked on all versions of Server 2008 but perhaps it only works on the R2 release of Server 2008.

You may have to still do #3. I think when I wrote that post Server 2008 wasn't even at SP1 yet.
