Dear Gallery Developers:

I know the principle of the DNN developers of not offering delivery estimates, time-lines, etc. etc.  But come on, the last update in the Gallery blog (by Chris) is from May 2006 (Tam's is empty and should be deleted).  Many people have respectfully asked for an update and these posts are ignored (some have 0 responses).

So now, I respectfully would like to say that the DNN community deserves a response from the developers, even if it is that the project is being dropped or whatever, but please communicate with us.  As you now the Gallery module is very popular and many people (including me) would like to stay with the DNN modules and not having to use third party ones.  At the very least a final "Production" version of the module should be released instead of telling us not to use it for production because it is Beta.

Thank you.

Carlos

I have to agree with Carlos. Last update on this module is from last may and says it will be out by the end of June and the project page contains a bunch of blogs posts about the forum module.

We all understand not committing to a date, etc. But atleast give us a clue as to what is going on?

Bill

Hey guys,

Here is a "non-official" update and at least from my point of view what's happening with the Gallery module currently.

Life kind of jumped in and got in the way of things just at the wrong time.  The last official released beta of the module came out right as the core was switching over to ASP .Net 2.0.  It was a quick fix of several outstanding bugs and not really intended to be used with 4.0 + installs.  Unfortunatly there were some changes made to the core 3+ DNN, the big ones I can think of right off the top of my head are the way uploads are handled and role permissions.  The bad part of all that was we became really busy.  Crispy, a core team member and only developer of the forums got busy with his real job, the second of two DNN books and stablizing the Forums.  I was busy getting a new job, moving to Colorado and writing server code for a cable company.  Nes I'm not sure of but I've heard rumors of beautiful women and beaches.  ;)

The current beta module is an old DNN module thats been hacked at and beat into submission and there are just to many things to change in it now to make it viable for the future.  We are working on a complete rewrite at this time. From the ground up. Although there are still books to write, mortgagage paying jobs to do and beautiful women on beaches there is also some real hope that soon there will be a new release to the module.  Not giving any dates but I think everyone will be happy with the module once it's released.

Just to let everyone know the Gallery module was the only reason I chose to run DNN on my servers.  I've got several clients that are professional photographers and I've got hundreds of photos on my sites.  So I've been affected by everything I've seen posted here at one time or another.  So I've got some skin in the game also.  ;)

Hang in there,

Paul Davis

Thanks Paul, I truly appreciate the information.

You know, I understand that life happens, it is happening to me too.  But the communications with the community regarding the Gallery Module leave a lot to be desired.  I have left posts in both of the Gallery Module forums and they went unanswered for months, literally.  Why should that be?  Why not post an official "This module is on hold for now" and then update it every few months?

Now, I have to ask, when will there be an "Official" announcement about the Gallery Module?  Again, I'm not asking when will it be done, but please inform your community.

Is the development of the new module architecture actively going on?  Why not make a final release of the module in its current form, with bugs out, for 4.5?  If you make this module stable for this release you can then get a bunch of people off your back and dedicate yourself to the new development.

Thank you for your effort.

Carlos
