Hello,

I currently am running DNN 5.01.01 with the Gallery Module 4.3.0.  I believe this gallery module was the beta that was released back in July '09.  I have been looking through this forum to find out a) if there are any "gotchas" that I need to be aware of before upgrading and b) the correct upgrade path and steps.  I haven't been able to find anything, so I was hoping that I could briefly/basically outline what I was going to do so that if I'm wrong somebody can catch me before it's too late.  :)

Based on what I read on the forum post about upgrading DNN, my upgrade path is to go to DNN 5.04.04.  I was planning on upgrading this first and then upgrading the gallery module to the latest stable release 4.03.00.  Is this the best thing to do?  Should I upgrade the Gallery module first and then upgrade DNN?

Also, I couldn't find anything about this, but do I have to uninstall the Beta of the 4.3.0 Gallery module before installing the stable release or can I just upgrade it as it is.  I have a few existing galleries and I would love to be able to keep them without having to rebuild them all.  Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

If you plan on running DotNetNuke 5.04.04 (or later) in an ASP.Net 4.0 AppPool or if you will be upgrading DotNetNuke to 05.05.00 or later , you would need to first upgrade Gallery to the 04.03.03 Release Candidate which I uploaded ot the Gallery project on CodePlex a few days ago. The RC also addresses a number of other annoying but relatively minor issues in the Gallery 04.03.00 release. I expect to submit Gallery 04.03.03 to the Release Tracker testing project tomorrow to eventually become an official release.

As for upgrading Gallery 04.03.00 BETA to the official 04.03.00 release, it is generally not possible to upgrade a beta to final release of the same version. That is one of the reasons why beta releases are not recommended for live production sites. However, in the case of Gallery 04.03.00, there are no SQL database scripts used so it should be OK to upgrade the beta to the same version. The extensions installer will treat this as a "repair" install and simply copy the assembly (dll file) and other files over the files of the same name. Keep in mind, however, if you have altered any of the themes to customize the appearance of the gallery, those changes would be overwrriten on any upgrade. As always, backup your files and database before attempting any upgrade.

Unless you will be running DotNetNuke 5.04.04 on ASP.Net 4.0, I would recommend leaving Gallery alone until the new 4.03.03 release candidate passes testing or you are forced to upgrade Gallery to run ASP.Net 4.0 or upgrade DotNetNuke past 5.04.04.

Bill,

Thanks for your reply; it was very helpful. I have a couple of follow-up questions.

I checked with my hosting service and the .NET Runtime Version is ASP.NET 2.0/3.0/3.5 with IIS 6. When I originally set this up, DNN was just starting to support IIS 7 and there were still some kinks so I just went with the old IIS 6. My plan was to get all of this (DNN and the gallery module, since they are what are most important for our family website) upgraded to the latest version and then attempt to move over to IIS 7 and ASP.NET 4.0.

So, based on what you are saying, my plan now will be to upgrade to DNN 5.04.04 and then wait to upgrade the Gallery until the RC passes testing. I was planning on also upgrading to DNN 5.05.01, but it seems from your comment in the last paragraph that there would be a problem with that. Would that break something (I have read so many posts over the past couple of days that I'm forgetting what the issue would be with that.)? Anyway, it sounds like you are recommending that after the RC passes testing then install the Gallery and upgrade to the latest stable DNN. Is that all correct?

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me.

Regards,
John

That would seem to be a prudent path. Gallery v 4.03.00 cannot run under DNN 5.05.00 and above due to a change in the core AddFolder method. As the Gallery module is important to your site, your only other option would be to upgrade Gallery to the 4.03.03 Release Candidate at this time then upgrade DotNetNuke to 5.05.01 but until Gallery goes through the release testing process for "core" modules I cannot officially recommend that option.

Before you switch the ASP.Net runtime version to 4.0, you will want to check with vendors/developers of any third party modules your site is using to make sure they are compatible with ASP.Net 4.0.

Also, if your site is currently using the XML module, be sure to upgrade that to the latest version prior to upgrading to or past DotNetNuke version 05.03.00.
