I looked around before asking and couldn't find this question.

Why does the gallery module put full copies of the _source files in the root of the gallery folder or subfolder?

The reason I'm asking is because I saw no information about this and I didn't realize that the duplicates were present in those two places until I started getting notices from my hosting service about nearing my quota. This is bad and it takes up a ton of space when you have multiple galleries and 100's of images in each. Even with the files being only around 40 - 90KB each this adds up quickly.

If you delete the files the gallery breaks and you have to sync it again, at which time it simply creates the duplicates and you're back to a working gallery but behind the scenes the duplicates are back taking up space again.

Any info is appreciated.

There are actually 3 copies of your files.

In the _Source directory should be your original source files (this is where you should upload your files to).  It is the full file, in its full size.  This version is used when downloading the image (selecting download option)

In the directory itself (the one above the _source) is the medium sized version.  The one that is shown when looking at the slideshow.  Usually around 500x500 or whatever you set it to in the gallery config.

the _Thumbs directory stores a small thumbnail version of the image to be used when viewing the list of pictures.  Usually sized around 100x100.

You can erase all of the files in the main directory and the _thumbs directory and then go to the maintenance/sync option and it will recreate those two files.

Thanks for the quick response James.

Basically what you stated in detail I was already summarizing, but you did explain the nature of the _source folder and that was the one thing that I really needed to know. I guess in my case since I'm only uploading files that are approximately sized at 500 X 500 to the gallery then the files in the source and the gallery root will be exactly the same size.

I can understand why things are working the way they are, but  if I'm not enabling the "Slideshow" feature it would be nice to have the root directory stay empty. In particular I have a site that has probably about 3000 pics in only 2 months and the root directory copies are just taking up space. So if I was asking for a feature or enhancement then I would want to have the root directory only create itself and populate files if the gallery creator enabled the "Slideshow" options.

Thanks again for the info.
