I have set up many DNN sites using windows server but not one with XP pro.  Well Today I was asked to do it for someone but IM having problems.  I have followed the instructions in the PDF to the T.  The person wants to just learn how to use it before he starts a portal on his Hosted site.  He is using iis5, and SQL Server Express. I am getting this error and Im not sure why. I have a feeling it has something to do with my web.config file but Im not exactly sure what needs to be changed when running SQL express.  Please look over this error and let me know what i need to change it.  I created the Database name: Database for simplicity and his name as USER and PASS.  Set it up like the PDF tells you to with user rolls and what not.  I enabled the security permissions tab in XP pro and added the ASP.NET machine account to the permmisions and gave it full access.  In ISS I just created a virtual Directory and pointed to the folder where the DNN stuff is.  Made sure ASP was selected and closed it.

What am I doing wrong.

Thanks
Dusty

That is a very unusual error (of all the errors I have seen during installation).

This article addresses your error specifically, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555583/en-us

Also, if you put a simple html file in the DNN directory, would IIS serve it to you using //localhost/yourdnndirname/test.html ???

Make sure that the site is using the right version of ASP.Net for your DNN implementation, <= 3.X uses .Net 1.1, >= 4.x uses .Net 2.0

You may also need to reregister ASP.Net, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306005/en-us

Good luck.

Thanks, that did fix the problem of that but I guess I still am not getting the web.config file figured out.  First time using SQL Express.  I have been playing with the strings but nothing is working.  I keep getting the Dotnetnuke upgrad error or just the normal Can not connect to database error.  What am I missing.  I used the Server Management tool to create the database and set a login for it that was the owner of the database.  I just dont know what Im missing with this.  It usually isnt this hard to figure out.

GRRRR

Thank again.

Dusty:

What version of DNN are you using??? There are differences in the options in the web.config file between 3.x and 4.x.

In any case, check the following site for examples of the connection strings:
