Well, I've finally given up...

I've had so much trouble trying to get DDN3+ and DNN4+ to work I've gone back to using DNN2.1.2 exclusively. Put simply every version above 2.1.2 has the same fault, the "Object referenced" error. This may not be an issue on super fast servers with mega amounts of memory and GHz of processors and Server 2003, but put simply I cannot afford those kinds of systems. I have an old 2k box and that's all I have available for at least the next 9 months. I've tried everything I can to get the latest versions to work. I've tried 3 different machines (I even tried on my personal machine that I use for games). I've tried patching with the latest .Net SDK and MDAC to make it as close to a development system as possible. I've done heavy caching, I've done memory caching, Disk Caching, Page (basically every variation available). Nothing has worked.

So I'm dropping DNN until further notice and maintaining my 2.1.2 sites and moving all my newer sites down to 2.1.2 as well. This is a real disappointment as I absolutely love the look and feel of the new stuff and the integrated forum was a real bonus for me as most of the stuff I use DNN for are community sites (so I don't get any money for them). But there's no point building a site that no one can use and that's my reality. I simply cannot afford to chase ghosts.

I am really sorry to hear this.  I know the core team is doing everything they can to offer both the features and stability the community wants.  Please do check back and try later versions of DotNetNuke, I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised.

Alien, this is such a general term for something that is failing somewhere down the line... Do you have any specific or detailed error reports? I'm sure DNN can run on Win2000 or XP Pro! If you try to give more info, we can try to help you out!

I agree with CasperJuna, I know that DNN can run on Win  2K and XP Pro as I have multiple installations running on both platforms as well as multiples on Windows Vista.

If you can give us some information I am sure that we can get you up and running.

It seems general in the way it fails. As far as I can tell it's the caching error that's been well documented elsewhere on the forums. Galleries tend to be the worst but the other one that really did it for me was the forums.

When logged in as admin (in 4.4.1) it seems okay and I can post new forum threads. When logged in as a standard user it suddenly becomes very erratic. Some users have stated that they can post, but others (myself included) always get the "object reference" error when trying to start a new thread. I'm not entirely sure but this may be related to the fact that it's at this point that it tries to pull up the text editor.

The following is pretty much an exact match for the issue I'm having...

System is running on Server 2000 with SQL 2000.
