I went through some contortions installing 4.4.1. While removing the "Comments" from the Web.Config is something any ASP developer would notice mgrimaldi does make some points. When it comes to the connection string/database this is not a fault of DNN. I put the software on two different web servers (DiscountASP.Net & Gate.com) as well as a local installation for development. All installations use IIS, ASP.NET 2.0 and SQL Server 2005 (note not the Express Edition). All three installations required differing connection strings.

Local installations was a bit more troublesome as the "installer module" created by someone did'nt work for beans. I had to manually set up SQL 2005, IIs and Visual Studio 2005.

As to "comments" in the files that are DNN I agree. That is to say the Source Code is sparse as far as comments go as are the module sources. Documenting Source Code is Programming 101, one of the first things taught in computer science. It sure does make things difficult for developing and understanding how DNN works.

With that said, DNN is a fine piece of work and the coding in the core framework is excellent.

As to your task itself mgrimaldi do realize that DNN is a framework, it is not a Content Management System (CMS). Joomla or Mambo are excellent CMS systems and performance/functionality wise will run rings around DNN. However, they are not portal frameworks.

Many people seem to confuse this distinction. The popular CMS systems like say Joomla have modules/Mambots/Components that will pretty much do anything one can do with a DNN portal. But, they are not portals. Thats an important distinction. DNN can create multiple sites from one installation and through that be efficient in doing so. Mambo, Joomla etc. are singular installations.

    Mark:

I had a hard time going over the messages posted and to truly see what is going on.  But anyway, my first recommendation when things don't make sense is to do an IISReset.  Don't change anything else and test to see what happens.  I know, I know, but sometimes changes in settings are not applied right away, even in Win2003.

The other general recommendation I would like to make, and it is based on something I learned back when a "few" security issues were found in IIS running on Windows NT 4.0, is that I never run sites, from "localhost" on the server.  Do you have a domain defined that can get you to the server and that you could configure for your new DNN site?  I usually prepare before hand so that when I get to the point of running the DNN install, I do it from an actual domain name and not localhost.  I would also recommend a new Web site and not a Virtual Directory under the Default Site.  Again, to avoid confusion and possible problems.

By the way, if you don't have a true domain to use for this purpose, see this post I made some days ago discussing how to fake a domain using the Hosts file.  I wrote it for a local install on WinXP but it works exactly the same for an installation on a server.

    Remember the IISReset...

Carlos

NukeAlexS:  I'm happy to hear that you are not interested in a flame war (is that a D & D reference?) yet your original post was unhelpful and rude.  Also, the book I referenced that you were so quick to dismiss was written by Shaun Walker.  Ever heard of him?

Cheer up, though.  Your response actually helped me resolve the issue.  Look for my conclusion post.  Have a good day, junior.

Carlos - Yep, I'm very intimate with the iisreset thing :-).  I was actually successful in installing DNN.  I posted a conclusion but haven't seen it yet.  Also, I only loaded on localhost AND in a virtual directory because all the install documentation showed to do it that way.  I, like you, prefer to create it as its own website and will do so now that I have a successful install.  I have a domain and will apply this when I reinstall.  Again, I was only using localhost to stay true to the installation instructions and to keep things simple at first.

A big issue I see is that if an install fails you should delete everything - database, website, files, etc. before attempting again.  I think my issue may have been a domino effect, starting with one error and snowballing into more errors.  This caveat should be emblazened in every book written on DNN.

Thanks for all your advice and, most importantly, your patience.  I have been surprised by all the help thrown at me.  Kind regards, Mark.
