Is this "feature" some secret that no one wants to share?

I have been trying to implement this same scenario - one user accessing multiple portals.

How is it done programmatically?

Can someone provide a code sample?

Does this "feature" really exist?

It would be great to hear how and/or if this is addressed in the most recent releases of DNN.  If you have a parent and a child portal,  I want the users to be able to access all of the portals with just one registration.  It's almost like DNN does half of the process.  You can't use the same User Name on the individual portals, but it will allow you to if you use the same User Name and Password.

If it's the same User Name and Password than why do they have to duplicate the registration process on every portal? Isn't one enough?

Also, why do users (even the ADMIN account) keep getting logged out if they're using the child portal? Now if you duplicate the account on both portals this random logout doesn't happen.  But, I can't see asking members to please repeat their registration process on every portal.  Thanks to anyone who can help out!

The DNN move to the ASP.Net membership system is really what is prevening the team from implementing some of these suggestions.  It doesn't allow an individual user to be a member of more than one application (applications are mapped to portals in a DNN context).

Overcoming this ASP.Net limitation would require some serious kludging, and I wouldn't expect to see it so long as the underlying membership system stays the way it is.  However, because this is such a serious shortcoming, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the underlying membership mechanisms changed to support this sort of behavior.

So the short answer is you're pretty much out of luck for now.  Blame Microsoft. not DNN.

However, I think there's still some problem with this method

Just imagine : I have 2 subportals running under my parent portal with 2 different admins. When one registers in another's portal by a same account, he will reveal his own password to that guy and can lose his portal in a flash!

Not a nice thing to think about, is it?

The method that has been referred to in this thread no longer works in newer versions of DNN 3.3.x and 4.3.x.  I have a module I created for a client for his 3.2.2 install that worked very well but will not function in the newer versions.

Through code you can essentially create the user in the portal you want them to have access to and it effectively registers them.

It appears that this method will no longer work in newer versions.  I hope to find a work around soon.

The log out issue you are experiencing seems to happen with any account that is not a member of the parent portal.  I see this happen in my 3.2.2 sites and in my 4.0.x sites.  The only solution appears to have them registered in the parent portal.

I hope this information is helpful.
