Thanks for the wealth of information Mitchel.  My presentl situation is as follows. I have a dedicated 3GHZ server with 1GB of ram, 64 bit Win 2k3 OS and 120gb of hard drive space.

Question- Is it more efficient to run two portals(master and child) with 50 modules each(for example) than one portal with 100 modules? Does this make a difference? I was thinking about running my content based modules on one portal and my community based modules on another.

My first guess might be to say that it would be SLIGHTLY better to do two separate installs, that is unless they MUST be child portals.  However, I do not have ANY solid basis for making that assumption.

I can say that inital load times for each would be reduced as it is less that would be JIT compiled.

all ASP.net 2.0 applications should use a separate Application Pool, where limitations might apply as well, check the app pool configuration.

I've been told by my hoster that each domain has their own app pool. But start-up is still quite slow. Once loaded, performance is good. Am wondering if there is anything else from a hosting config point of view that might impact intial load. Am running 4.4.1.

hi,

I've had serious performance issues too, one of the modules loaded on my portal was a tag cloud module. After removing this specific module, my Portal performance improved drastically.

I will not name the module, but if you have a tag cloud module on your portal, try removing it and see if there is a difference.

Jeff,

initial load time is due to ASP.Net JIT compiling, that is kept in memory, until the site is not used for a certain time, by default 20 minutes. Pinging it frequently every 15 mins by an external site check service like www.host-tracker.com can avoid this.
