I looked this up on the MSDN website, and the "enablePasswordRetrieval" attribute is a value found in the web.config file in the membership provider section. But, I'm running 4.6.2, and do not have this in my web.config at all.

I do recall that when I tried to upgrade from 4.5.3 to 4.6.0 I had to remove a lot of entries from the web.config in the provider section.

Did you by chance happen to upgrade this website from a version older than 4.6.0?  If so, then you might some leftovers in your web.config that are giving you grief.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  I compared my web.config file to the release.config in the install for 4.6.2 and there is this section in both:

 <add name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" connectionStringName="SiteSqlServer" enablePasswordRetrieval="false" ...

I think when I did the upgrade, I set this to false thinking that it disabled the password reminder feature (for security reasons, we don't want people being emailed their domain account passwords).  Apparently, this actually disables the lookup feature that checks the password against what's in active directory.
I set this to true, and now the logins work.

enablePasswordRetrieval is under <add name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider".... /> and by default it's set to "true" so that shouldn't be it but you could try setting it to False and seeing what happens.

I'm wondering if impersonation might be necessary on the site.

Sorry, I mislead you on my statement.  I "do" have that in my web.config.  What I meant to say is that I didn't have that option in the ASDI provider, and thought that might have been the one I removed.

But, glad I was able to point you in the right direction.  There is very little in the web.config file that you can modify without it having an undesired effect.

I usually set the visibility to false for the Password Reminder in the Login.ascx (under Admin/Authentication for the wrapper).
