Just out of curiousity, DNN 4.7 was released yesterday.  Is the authentication module shipped with 4.7 any different than 4.62?

Nope Dan it's the same.

I had to change the authentication line in to:

Uncommenting the existing line threw an exception.

Otherwise the setup is the same as the last time.

I still have the same issues:

1.  Configuring AD settings still results in failures for GC, Root Domain, and LDAP.  This has been an issue since my first 4.? install and I simply ignore it and move on.  I should note here that entering the wrong information for the domain name throws an exception so if you get a failed attempt to authenticate then you probably have the correct domain name (at least if you are in a single domain environment).

2.  Information in the profile is still loaded in the wrong fields.  They are correct in AD, just not in the DNN profile.  If the code is finally available then I can fix it but finding users is going to be tough when the domain name is appended to the userid.

I'm not sure this was intended to introduce an update to the provider anyway so you might just wait for word in these forums for an update.

The commented out line is from the old provider. When the new one is installed it'll automatically add the correct line at the bottom of the httpModules section so I'm guessing you might have two lines with the same info in them. That may be part of the problem. As for the failures and info not being added to the DNN profile you may have to use impersonation on the site. Look for the commented out section in your web.config that starts <identity impersonate="true"/>. Uncomment that line only and change it so that it looks like <identity impersonate="true" userName="domain\username" password="password" />. The user you use in that line will have to have the same rights to your DNN folder that NETWORK SERVICE has.

I'm just waiting for someone on the core team to release the code here on DNN but if you want it you can find it on my website http://dnn.gmss.org.

Thanks Mike. Can you point me to the latest version, then? The main Active Directory project site doesn't have it in the downloads. I'm starting to wish I had not used qualifiers...

I don't think it was fixed for 4.6.2 as I don't think the mistake was found until after the release of 4.6.2. I'll have to check with the core team to see if it has been fixed for the next release of DNN.

You can find the install version in the Install/Packages directory of the DNN version you downloaded. However the script that's causing the error isn't part of the AD provider and is part of the scripts that run when DNN is installed/upgraded which are found under Providers/SQLDataProvider.

OK now that makes more sense. So the next question is does anyone know of the final fix procedure to get this working? Will upgrading to 4.7 fix the issue? In that case, where is the most user-friendly upgrade guide--I'm really nervous to perform the upgrade.

I haven't had a chance to check the scripts to verify if it's been fixed for 4.7 but will try to tonight.

Upgrading is really quite simple.

  1. Backup your database and your DNN install
  2. Unpack the upgrade or install version of DNN over your current install.
  3. If you use the upgrade package then rename your web.config to something else and then rename release.config to web.config. Copy the connection strings, machine keys, and any other custom changes that you made in your old web.config to the new web.config (A program like WinMerge is great for this). If you use the install package then do the same but use your backed up web.config.
  4. Hit your site and all should be good. If it isn't then you've got your backup versions that you can use to restore the site back to it's working version.
