ok, i can create a sub domain for developing.  but then how do i transfer the dev files to the live site?  and what if the site has dynamic content, how do i transfer those changes to the dev site?  i guess i'm trying to sync both of them.  i don't want to make changes to the dev site and then have it erase all of the dynamic content the live site has created/maintained.

how does everyone else approach this issue?

and to confuse myself even furthe, i am using godaddy's web hosting.  i already know of the issues with not being able to install to the main site's root folder.  now i have to figure out how to add portals with sub domains!

scratch that last comment.  i will most likely switch hosting providers just to save the headache.
