I was just wondering if anyone has tried a VPS yet?   They seem to be getting more affordable now.

Recently I received a quote for VPS hosting, with 1 domain license for Plesk control.  I specifically asked if I could install my licensed version of SQL and they had no problems with this.  Now I am wondering what the catch is.

We used to offer a line of VPS's at PowerDNN, and they were very popular.  The problem was we had some problems with stability.  The customers would usually try to max out the density of the VPS and it would make the actual virtual node itself unstable.  Just recently we have been revisiting virtualization, thinking that maybe we adopted the technology for production a little prematurely before.  We did a 2 month study this summer where we brought in a 3rd party consultant that specializes in virtualization to work along side our AtomicSLA team to do a full assessment/analysis of hosting for DotNetNuke in virtual environements.

The findings were interesting, but in a nutshell, consolidation and costs savings is limited by a combination of disk and memory I/O limits.  The disk I/O is really the main problem as this had a largest impact in performance base on our findings.  The part I thought was funny is that this company really wanted to sell us hardware as well as the software to offer a line of VPS's but when the analysis came back they had never seen disk I/O like that.  Virtualization, in it's current form (VMWare, Hyper-V), is really meant for the enterprise environment and not a hosting environment.

I guess in short if your are planning on hosting a decent number of DNN sites, and reliability is going to be important, a VPS might not be the best solution.

The first obvious suggestion is check the sponsirs of DNN.  The second is to check ORCSWeb, which hosts many Microsoft sites including www.asp.net and www.iis.net, or MaximumASP which hosts this site you're posting on.  :)

Hi again

Well I initially named this the “Hosting Jungle” and indeed it is.

Thanks for all input guys – now it’s all clear as mud!

I had a warning about GoDaddy regarding marketing and mailing over the server, one complaint about spamming and you are shut down forever – regardless of how false the complaint is. (Heard only, no proof or comment from GoDaddy.)

Reason for my search is that I want to leave Re-invent:
Competitive rates but from thereon it’s fees on fees.
$15.00 for pointing a Domain, $15.00 for backup, $15.00 for upgrade and so on..

More importantly you have very limited Cpanel access, can’t access the database fully yourself.

I was on my way to set up with ResellerChoice after DNN Creative’s recommendation, but now I better go and look at what “Power DNN” is doing.

Have Fun Guys!!!

Olle….

Hi Alex

How do you manage Re-Invents crazy fees?

I am not allowed access and can't do anything myself, have to pay them for every re-direct, pointing, updates or whatever I want to have done.

Last month I found $75.00 worth of charges on my credit card, and I havn't been able to get specification on what they charged me for..

I ended up selecting ResellerChoice - and so far so good!!!

Cheers

Olle...
