You aren't by chance heading to OpenForce next week in Vegas?  If so, we should do dinner and discuss.

If only ... sigh. I was there last year. Great event, you're gonna love it. I hope to be there next year. We'll see.

I love US history and politics, I read it from a variety of sources, and this year I am enjoying the American coverage I'm getting via my internet radio (and no I'm not listening to ANY mainstream news channels other than the BBC). I am listening to more American coverage than I am locally - WOW!

I find it a pity that you guys are similar to us in the fact that independents hardly get a chance or a say in the media, so I completely agree with Scott.

Sure there are a lot of pros and cons with either mainstream party and there a few things I don't like about Obama and the same for McCain. Regardless I would like to see the US have a black president, this will demonstrate for once that the American dream still operates across all sections and would be fantastic for international relations. I wish the UK could progress this far (all our parties seem to be the same at the moment over here)... at least you guys have a choice! and I just hope your voting machines are up to it, and the queues aren't putting you off:

I hope you guys all vote for anybody apart from Simon Cowell (bloody English :-).

Scott,

I agree with you 100%.  I think that the current state of U.S. politics is representative of the impatients, entitlement, and lack of personal responsibility that is pervading America.  I think that hard work, great ideas, and personal responsibilty should be rewarded. This is what keeps the American dream going.  Many people remember the dotcom boom during the late 1990's.  Many of those entrepreneurs were from outside the U.S. (many were from Europe) and they came here because America was a place where entrepreneurs were incented to persue their ideas.  Their successes were not heavily taxed as they would have been in their home countries.  The technological innovation that resulted from this period has given us much of the technology that we make our livelyhoods from today.  Many Americans take this for granted, because MTV and Oprah haven't properly explained the facts to their audiences.  It's just a shame that we rely on pop culture to inform our electorate in this country.

Like Scott, I am going to watch the elections tonight, probably get some work done before I go to bed.  Then I will be back working hard employing others, saving for my baby that's on the way, and then back at it again the next day.

Great thread guys!

You'd never believe what the system is here. In Switzerland the government is composed by a fixed mix representing the major parties. This means it is by definition a coalition government. The 'prime minister' is chosen from this select group for a term of a year. It is undoubtedly one of the most low profile heads of state jobs on the planet. In fact I can never tell who is our 'president' when I see a picture in the paper of him/her welcoming some foreign head of state at the airport. It's the other extreme to the fiery two-party systems like UK/US.

Peter, out of curiosity, how much is the PM able to accomplish in that year?  If he or she is not permitted a second year I would imagine they would be able to get a lot done.  I think a big problem the US has is all polititians spend their first term trying to get elected for a second term.  This means they kind of sit on the fense on issues so as not to offend their constituents or potential constituents.
