I just wanted to put down my experiences regarding easycgi.com hosting.
We had to set up our client's site on a test URL. They wouldn't set up the site with the final URL, they insisted on using a temporary one. We normally use the final URL and connect to the site using Windows HOSTs file until the DNS has been changed. They are not familiar with this approach.
Everything went fine until easycgi.com started updating their servers. Without notice some changes were made and the test url no longer worked. This shouldn't have mattered as the site was live but it did actually break a few things, namely the form module, which stopped sending enquiries to my client.
The next major problem occured last Friday when they changed their IP addresses. We got an email less than 24 hours before they did it. This wasn't picked until after the IP had changed and by this point it was too late to change the DNS on the URL as the company who has control stopped working for the weekend. This beggars belief, firstl to give such little notice and secondly to do it on a Friday.
We got the IP changed on Monday. The site worked for a few hours and then went down. We contacted support who told us the site was up. We couldn't see it, our client couldn't see it and the site owners couldn't see it. They didn't seem to have any idea about DNS. I suggested they look at intodns.com and act on some of the errors. This seemed to confuse matters more. I was told that the issue had been esculated and was high priority. This actually meant that they had put a support ticket in. I got a response today, 22 hours later.
The site was actually back yesterday. It looked fine but on close inspection they had somehow put up an old version, 3 weeks out of date. A lot of changes had been lost. We do have a backup but that's not the point. The point is what were they doing and how had it happened?
The client is not very understanding and is not happy anyway. They in the process ofseeking compensation. This is partly down to the fact that they don't like DotNetNuke but Easycgi have pushed them over the edge.
Today I look at the site and all I see is a page of errors. Apparently an engineer is working on it. Another support ticket has appeared in our control panel.
We are moving host immediately.
