Hi i have the following issue, using DNN 04.09.00 and having my SMTP setting configuered as below

SMTP Server and port: mail.mysite.com
SMTP Authentication:basic
SMTP Enable SSL:  no
SMTP Username:  username
SMTP Password:  password

tried with several other servers, same issue... test mails are sent successfully though.

the emails either dont go through at all or come late, the SMTP server/login/password is correct 100% but when i use contact form emails come in about 20% of the time... what may be the problem here?

Thanks for any ideas...

  1. See if you're mail server is blacklisted:  http://www.mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx
  2. Any specific mail services (gmail, hotmail, etc) that it doesn't come through for?
  3. It could also be the result of DNN dropping mail.  If you have access to you mail logs, you should check for incoming mail from your DNN server's IP address to ensure that all mail is arriving from the mail server.
  4. Any time I've had an issue like this in the past, it's almost always been My Own Darn Fault.  For example, we had the wrong IP for our external mail relay (we use Postini) or had a setting on our firewall that was blocking mail from the server.  Or, most embarrassingly, we deleted an interface from our firewall and forgot to check the mail rules (which had been routed through that interface previously) - our mail server was trying to route mail through a (null) interface.

Peter

when you say "they come late" so some of the emails are getting through?

If this is the case check your mail server to see if it is 'greylisting' items.  This is an antispam measure where the first connection from an IP in a certain time period is refused with an error saying "please try again later" then the subsequent attempt/s in the same time period are allowed.  At the end of the time period everything resets.  If you were using a email client such as Outlook you might get a notification saying your email had been delayed. Normally, the mail server would be configured to bypass this check when the sender authenticates, but sometimes this can be missed or the authentication only bypasses the check when the connection is made from a certain IP block/s.

I don't know if DNN will re-queue the message in these instances or not.
