Does anybody remember this contest:

http://www.packtpub.com/article/2008-open-source-cms-award-winner-announced

DNN was third - only being beaten out by Drupal and Joomla - not bad considering our Windows heritage, and we received some positive comments from the judges.

Wow, I just saw the light turn on as to why people could get confused.. If we're voting to compete against this sort of thing - eg.. other CMS products, it's hard not compare in the overall picture.  I see the runner up in the competition we all voted in, yet, in reality, it's not the same, but it seems close enough to not do justice to what DNN is.  And, tt wasn't till I really read through some of these posts, I could see where people get very confused, especially new people, especially if they have tried other php solutions, especially if they are coming in with the idea it's the same but better for whatever reason.

There is some excellent material in this thread.   I think that perhaps it would be a good idea if some structured comparisons on what a CMS is compared to the DNN framework would really help give newcomers a better idea of comparing 'apples with apples' rather than the very obvious 'apples with oranges' that seems to be occuring here.

I did a quick search on wikipedia for CMS and WCM

It seems in wikipedia there is quite a bit of confusion as well, just at first glance..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_management_system

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_content_management_system

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_content_management

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Component_content_management_system

I"m not a wiki person, but I know many are and it's a popular resource for research and it's an interesting observation that it's being compared still very closely.

This is an interesting topic and I can see where people may be getting confused too.

Which one will you choose?

A, D, E and F in my case, though I'm really tempted to go for G sometimes...  :)

No need to be defensive, Alex. I am well aware of your previous life as a critic, and your current life as one who performs a labor of love. I appreciate and respect what you are doing. Nonetheless, you often write in a way which is abrasive. True, as Cathal mentioned, that online forums, like email, leave lots of room for mistunderstanding. But when it is fairly regular, one figures it is probably not exactly mistunderstanding.

Another post of yours that I read only moments before the one to which I reacted is quoted below. I think you could make your points in less hostile-appearing manner. In fact, I am sure you could. Instead of getting all defensive, how about you just give that some consideration.

You wrote this to someone who has posted here a total of 9 times:

Clearly you haven't looked at third party modules and expect everything to provided for you for free. Ventrian modules and Active Forums would have easily sorted you out, and there are other localization solutions I believe... although you don't state the requirement.

There are also third party store modules but I believe they vary in quality right now (not sure, I haven't had to do a store site for a while thankfully).

If you expect everything to be provided to you on a plate for free, then yes, I suggest you go elsewhere.

C'mon now, Alex.

I would appreciate that the original posters comment was quoted and a URL provided... otherwise my comment could be taken out of context. Actually I think that comment of mine is entirely accurate... if you wish to read anything negative, or think there are some sort of personality issues into it, or sacasm, well that's the eyes of the beholder, not mine. Clearly he didn't the solution was good enough for him, he had grand expectations of free modules (there was no mention of third party solutions).... and he made a valid point about store modules in my eyes.... He said he had enough of DNN (expressed pretty strongly) and well that's fine and he is allowed to express that opinion, just like i am with my opinion..... as long as I don't get too personal about it. I agreed that he should move on if he thinks DNN is not suitable. There was nothing personal about those comments, I did not call him an idiot and I don't think he's an idiot.

Actually you could have easily written pretty similar comments like the above with the orignal poster.... if you had chosen to.

As to your point about somebody who had only posted 9 times... that's was the point... Only 9 posts and it appears he's an authority on DNN. I could hardly claim that myself.

At the risk of drawing more negative comments, I'm asking that this thread be locked or otherwise deleted.  There is certainly no use in continuing the animosity being generated here.  The question posted originally and the answers that speak to it, are no longer the subject.

Ignorance is the state in which a person lacks knowledge and is unaware of various issues in general. This should not be confused with being unintelligent, as one's level of intelligence and level of education or general awareness are not the same. The word 'Ignorant' is an adjective describing a person in the state of being unaware.

I would hope the goal of the forums is to help elevate the knowledgebase of everyone, but it is the task of the ignorant to take and assimilate the knowledge.  All cannot be effective teachers for everyone, nor can everyone grasp the knowledge,  so let's just move on, and enjoy whatever bliss we can as the week's end/beginning is upon us.

Peace to all!!

Alex.. why don't you...

Well, Salama, you could have left out the first paragraph from your post and we'd ALL be better off.

How about using your limited free time to post something *positive* that moves things *forward*. The best thing about your initial post on this thread was the link you provided. It's an interesting site that I will probably visit again. Other than that, you really didn't do anything much except back up your truck and hit the dump switch.

If you see features that other platforms have that you think DNN should consider, why not write up a thread that provides a reason for consideration, a method for integration, and a strategy for inclusion?

You seem like a smart guy, why not go that route instead.

Did you not read my posts carefully? I wrote up specific points and in a list format for easier reading. Why didn't you ask me for some working code also!?

If someone wants to know how drag &drop works, there are many examples on the web. I

am not a DNN

developer or a Javascript expert. I use commercial third party UI frameworks to get the functionality quickly and reliably. I know DNN will not allow these dependencies.

(Yes I expressed my displeasure with Alex. He's just a tester and should stick to being one instead of acting above that role)
