I've mostly given up on purchasing 3rd party modules now also after quite a few disappointments, especially some 3rd party modules actually losing money for the problems they have caused.

For the last 6 months or so I'll only use Core modules, Ventrian, and ones I develop myself.  I keep an eye on others but am quite reluctant to touch them after the experiences I've had.

I'm not sure about the 'per site' purchasing as all modules I've purchased in the past could be used across all portals.

I also agree with Nelson, that he clearly purchased a skin from SnowCovered and SnowCovered should have the responsibility of resolving the matter... not simply pass the buck as they have done.  I'd definitely demand a refund or for the skin purchased to be provided as advertised.  Was it paid via PayPal?  If so, I'd lodge a complaint there that the product purchased was not delivered.

I think there are 3 things that would help here (any or all of which may well be in the pipeline already):

  1. Improve the baseline quality of the core modules, so you know that when you choose DNN you're going to be able to cover the 90% case out of the box without too much pain and consultancy. Progress is being made here (e.g. the blog module), but there's definitely more to do.
  2. As the core modules are no longer pre-installed by default, make it much clearer what core modules are available and what they do. This could do with being highlighted on the download page, during the install and when logged in as admin .
  3. Introduce an official stamp of approval for third party modules and skins, indicating that it has been independently verified to do what it claims and ideally that a reasonable level of documentation and support is available. I seem to remember there was also an effort a while ago to introduce a basic code review process, which could maybe be resurrected and made a criterion for a "gold" stamp.  I'm sure serious developers wouldn't mind paying a fee to cover the cost of the approval process if it helped to distinguish them from hobbyists like myself.

And yes, if you buy a product from a reseller, they should be the ones responsible for refunds etc. Not sure about the US, but I think this is the law in most jurisdictions.

I have an update to my previous post. As soon as I hit go on my post, it occurred to me I should have triple checked my install. It made no sense to use almost no functional module other than administrative. I browsed the folder and could see additional goodies. I logged in to the site as host and clicked on extensions, but there wasn't anything there. I then reviewed my user guide. No dice. Inuit google again and stumbled across a video at DNNCreative. I had to log in and select extensions from the host drop down menu. I was then able to find and install the few cor modules I was after. This would have been nice in the user guide. I had also looked for a list of bundled features on the dnn site. This would have let me know they did exist, if nothing else. There is probably a list buried somewhere in the dnn site. Basically, I am much happier today but still don't think I'd toss away 30-1000 dollars to find out if a module works as anticipated.

Hi

I haven't realy bought things of snowcovered since the takeover but before when I needed a refund I would get it but that was a while ago allready. There was one rule tho that it needed to be within thirty days so they could refund from the developers money before paypal payout was done. I never did difficult myself with giving refunds if they wanted it and reason was valid they got it.

But I had clients that had the same issue so I realy think DotNetNuke / Snowcovered should step up to the plate.

Its true that a lot of the modules are crap or plainly core modules with simple addons, asp.net wrappers for free jQuery code but its up to the person to buy or not. I have refrained from buying becvause of this quality and stories I hear about faulty products no refund posibillities. This is not giving DotNetNuke the best name especially since SnowCovered is now theres.

I will stick to the developers I know and custom moodules

just my 2 cts

- When DNN bought SnowCovered (SC), did they replace the staff? I mean what made the quality of service change?

- Even though SnowCovered has a rating system, it seems it's not utilizied by the public to useful. Did check the skin's reviews ot it didn't have any?

- My guess Snowcovered doesn't check the quality of their listings. The developer posts their product, puts any description and SC takes its cut.

- I am not sure how SC would refund the purchase. The developer got his money after SC's share. Unless SC tells the developer to refund the money. Is that what SC should do?

- Last, are there free website which have good reviews on DNN modules and skins.
