FYI - I am also having this problem and we have had many clients report recently similar situations. I am not really sure what SMTP settings would have changed between DNN versions. Ill try and follow your advice, possibly upgrading the.NET Framework. I have posted some notes to a development forum and send an email out to a few folks that might be able to provide some more information on this. Thanks for the useful post! -Chad www.datasprings.com

FYI - We have made the changes suggested here related to changing this: smtpClient.ServicePoint.MaxIdleTime = 2 Within the mail.vb file. We will monitor this on our server which was affected (we believe) related to these issues. Ill let you know what we find out! -Chad

Hi Chad,

Great!!...I've managed to avoid the problem the proble on our affected server and I've not had time to check the proposed fix, but I've logged this on gemini,

http://support.dotnetnuke.com/issue/ViewIssue.aspx?id=12939&PROJID=2

Alex has suggested to put an option in the web.config to match the proposed fix.  Could you post your results there as well, just to help things along??

Regards,
Dave.

I am not sure how this fix is to be applied. I have installed .NET 4.0 and I am still having issues. Let me go through a few things with you guys:

  • I am running 6 DNN 5.4.4 Instances - These Instances are affected by the email issues that has been discussed here:
    http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/F...
  • I am also running two sites that are on DNN versions 5.2.2 and 5.2.3 - These sites have no problem what so ever sending out Newsletter emails. They do not expereicne the following:
    1. Unlike the 5.4.4 Instances - they actually send the message correctly. On 5.4.4 the only thing that comes through is the SMTP test message
    2. When sending emails because of new user registration, newsletters, ect. The CPU does not spike at all!

How can it be assumed that I do not have something configured correctly when the older DNN Instances work perfect... It is only the 5.4.4 instances that experience these issues.

Last night we upgraded/installed the following on our server:

  • Upgraded RAM from 2GB to 8GB
  • Installed .NET 4.0 Framework

All DNN 5.4.4 sites I have set the application poll to use the 4.0 framework:

All the sites still function normally, however the email CPU issue and the test SMTP message is still evident when testing the newsletter function of DNN. Please note the performance chart below:

Also I am not sure if this helps but this is the only process running that has any significant CPU usage:

In the end it does not matter if I set these sites to use classic or integrated managed pipeline, .net 3.5 or .net 4.0 - DNN 5.4.4 still has issues... Can anyone explain how they applied the Gemini fix? I am still needing to fix two issues:

  1. The high CPU usage from emails being sent by DNN 5.4.4
  2. The emails not actually being delivered by DNN 5.4.4 - Possibly related to a bug that causes a test message to be sent when using the newsletter module - this is the same test as the SMTP test function.

Thank you.
