I had also a issue with sending e-Mail from DNN but it was related to the E-Mail Server configuration.  If you run your own E-Mail Server make sure you dont use restriction or check for not local existing email addresses and and if needed don't check if the email domain is local on your E-Mail server.   If you only have a hosting ask your ISP for an open SMTP server or open auth-SMTP server.

Basicly it is good to use as admin address the same domain as you have used on SMTP Username on Host settings.

Would GoDaddy have these restrictions? If so, what settings should I ask my network admin to change?

I don't know how GoDaddy configured thier Mail Servers.  The question should be better relaited to GoDaddy support.

There is definitely a bug in the 5 version. We just scaled back a site from 5.4.4 to 5.3.1 to get email working, no go. We have over 100 DNN sites running and only suddenly this issue is giving us fits on sites we want to release. Here's what I've discovered to far:

1. We have admin@currentdomain.com enabled, set it up in Admin and Host SMTP Settings - test email from Host SMTP says it's working.
2. The test emails show up in the admin@ email folder.
3. Using the Newsletter function if we try to send to any user (even registered users) to any other email address other than admin@ it will say it's gone out but the error log has two exceptions here claiming that all the other users are now found

InnerException: Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: <jc@wowwebworks.com> No such user here
FileName:
FileLineNumber: 0
FileColumnNumber: 0
Method: System.Net.Mail.SmtpTransport.SendMail

4. Any emails I try putting into the additional email field - same results, no go.
5. Our Smith Cart won't send emails like we have it doing on 6 other sites
6. Our contact forms fail.
7. No emails are sent to new users after registration

Fact is, the email set up in 5.4.4 and 5.3.1 (which we downgraded the site to) are not functioning properly.

On my 5.2 site, when I send newsletters they all come in html code and if I send 10 emails, I get each one sent to me as the administrator, in html code fashion. Glad I didn't send a 1000.

The whole 5 level email set up is broken at many levels and I'm not seeing anywhere were DNN will admit it's an issue and just give us a fix. Do a 5.4.5 for heaven's sake if 5.5 is going to take eternity.

Right now, I assured our client we'd have their site up this week end, no problem. It's using the Smith Cart and can't email notify anyone of anything when sales are made and the egg is slowing dripping down my face. Next step is to take it all down and go to 4.9 and then endure upgrade hell with the smith cart after 5.5 finally shows.

I called our host company ihostasp.net - their techs confirmed may reports of the same thing and their only answer was to downgrade at this point. They may be removing 5.4.4 from their list of install because they can no longer recommend it.

Is that enough evidence of a problem?

Hope for some answers,
John

John,

your issue is related due the SMTP Server settings.  If you read the full thread here you want find how the SMTP server must be configured.  Your SMTP Server did not allow sending mails from a e-mail that is not local.

Thank you. I disregarded that as we've had the same hosting company doing all our sites and never ran into that issue with any site we've set up. I have a trouble ticket in now to specifically check for that setting and will report back here what was found when I get it.

On a similar note - 5.4.4 and 5.3 does have an issue with messing up emails which either show with HTML code exposed instead of used or replacing spacing with the HTML spacing code. Smith Cart receipts are coming like that and causing them fits and I've had to stop using the Newsletter module as a tool from my own website because of it. Useless.

Is this being addressed?

John

I still say there should be a SMTP setting for each PORTAL and one for the HOST so you can send emails with different domain names,  HOW can you send an email from contact@anotherdomain.com if the host is setup to contact@domain.com????

This is just not going to work for most people including all my sites.  I do not want ANY relationship with the host email to the portals I setup... HOW can this be accomplished?  The method you say using a relay server is considered using a SPAM server and most email servers will end up rejecting your domain emails as others abuse your mail servers IP address.
