Michael,

I have set up a separate directory under the portal to capture all videos.

First, I use a very small flv file, say about 5MB and upload it using the Repository capabilities.  This puts the file into the database and take very little time.  Note that this file will be replaced with the next step, so the file name should be unique and the same as the file file name.

Next, I use an add on for FireFox call FireFTP to upload the "real" file to the server.  I upload the file to the same folder and using the same name as that uploaded using the Reposity module.  This is mandatory, as there is no other way in the Repository module to re-link a file.

In this manner, I have eliminated the need to manually update the database.

If you need to review the database, you will need to use a software package such as the SQL Server Management Studio, to manually update the "repository" tables.

Regards
Hans

Hans - all that  happens when you embed an swf in a page is that it causes the flash player plugin to launch inside the web browser and execute the instructions compiled inside the swf file.

As to exactly when the content of that swf starts running - is totally up to the person who created the swf.  There is no physical requirement for an entire flash file to be downloaded before it plays.

If that SWF file has the flvplayer class installed inside it then out of the box you get FLV streaming and a fully skinable playback system with all the controls for start, stop, volume etc already build in -- it takes no more than 10mins to have a fully functional flvplayer compiled and running in an swf - from a standing start.

There is nothing magical about flowplayer - its a built in feature of flash itself - any flv or f4v can work is a way that appears stream like.  Note though you will never get the full benefits of streaming without a stream server if you are looking for the ability to easily jump around in a stream.  That still requires the rtmp:// transport to work properly.

What I was suggesting to bill was that we should include a generic flash flvplayer swf as part of the gallery module to allow flv and f4v files to be played directly from the gallery module -  AS opposed to looking at licencing a 3rd party player - which would be kinda of overkill for the gallery module at this late stage of its pre 6.0 life.

That's a lot easier than I thought it would be.    Does this also update the file size and play time on the display?
