the 'Add / remove programs' states IIS Express 7.5 so this might be where the problem lies.

I've now tried attaching to everything that has the  username  IIS / APPPOOL/DefaultAppPool (conhost.exe and w3wp.exe) and of course, you've guessed on loading we still don't get the breakpoints hitting.

I've even tried different browser and temporarily removed the firewall.

Certainly attaching to the wrong process would explain my problems, but which process should I be attaching to?

Thanks again

I've read that F5 entering debug also attempts to attach to the w3wp process , however when I try this I get the error message 'Unable to start debugging on the Web Service' - trawling through the VS Help seems to be pointing to Windows Authentication needs to be installed. It doesn't appear in my Turn feature on / off panel so I'm thinking that this might be the issue. I let this thread hang overnight to see if anyone can confirm that this might be the issue.

 Thanks

please check in windows notification area, whether there is an IIS express or Cassini (built in web server of VS 2008) showing up. in this case you need to access the appropriate process.

Thanks for all the effort Sebastian,

With my localhost website up and running there is no icon in the windows notification area.

I try to Customise and with Webdev.Webserver.exe (ASP.Net Development Server) set to show notifications and icon there is no change and nothing is seen.

In Task Manager the only thing I can see is IISADMIN.

If all this is such an issue - should I be looking to buy licences for IIS and possibly SQL Server since the books I've read appear to indicate that Express editions are problematic for development.

 Thanks again

if you are running IIS Express, it is designed for development scenarios. But IIS built into Windows Server should for sure be optimal to run the sites and SQL Server Express edition is fine for most small and medium web sites.
