Also make sure your file system is NTFS and not FAT.

Okay I am sure this is me but I have downloaded the DotNetNuke_4.3.6_Install.zip file and have edited the Web.Config file and uploaded to a clean server.

However I now recieve the following;Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="Off"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

Server Error in '/' Application.

Runtime Error

I have located the CustomErrors entry and modified it to read

    <!-- permits errors to be displayed for remote clients -->
    <customErrors mode="Off"/>

and then re-uploaded it to my site, but still get the same error. I am sure I have missed something simple but without the error can't really go much furthur.

I suspect I haven't commented out the SQLExpress connections or something properly. Could some king person please post a copy of the web.config file to connect to a SQL 2000 database.

Regards

Mark

What an I doing wrong?

I downloaded the Install package as well as the docs.  Followed the install instructions.  Finally surfed to http://localhost/DotNetNuke and got this:

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

I installed the Starter Kit on my machine (Windos XP SP2, Microsoft Visual Web developer 2005 Express Edition, SQL 2005 Express) and I had the following problems:

- I was not able to install the Module_compile_VB.zip error:'the project exstention doesn't exist in your installation'

- I proceeded with the installation not selecting that module. I created a new website in my File System and just press ctrl-F5. During the compiling process I had confirmation of success installation of each part but at the end the classic error message 'page can't be displayed....' (http://localhost:2201/DotNetNuke%20Website1/Default.aspx). i don't know if it's related but if I go andopen the default.aspx file in design mode I have the following error: 'unable to cast object of type 'System.Web.UI.Design.HtmlIntrinsicControlDesigner' to type 'System.Web.UI.Design.ControlDesigner'

It's amazing how these things work! A full working and functional website in a few steps. Truly awesome. A big challenge to discover the potential of this.  Great jobs from all you DNNukers !

Thanks,

PeterNL
