Wolverine,

No I haven't experienced that one. I have compression enabled and everything seems to be working fine on the 3 upgraded sites.

Alex,

Sounds like you forgot to copy the MachineKey settings from your original sites web.config file to the new one.

Oh no, I haven't gotten around to upgrading yet (still waiting for a good window)...I was just asking you, since you just upgraded 3 different sites...Just wondering.  Glad to hear that you haven't had any problems.

Thanks again!

Hey Alex,
Tried to upgrade one of my servers (I am glad I tried on my testing server first), the upgraded seemed to go ok, but I keep getting an error everytime I log in with an existing account

A critical error has occurred.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

If I create a new account everything seems to run ok, which made me think it was the machinekey in the web.config file...But I checked and everything is exactly the same.  I have run the upgrade twice now (restore the db back to the 4.3.4 version) and get the same results.  Thought it was the installation date in the web.config file (didn't add it in the first try), added it in the second upgrade try and it still didn't work.

The thing is, is that it doesn't give me the "log in failed, use not found" error which it should if the decryption was wrong...It just redirects back to the home page of the portal and gives me the "Object Reference" error.

Do you have any thoughts what this might be?

Thanks very much!

Sorry, just to close out the issue..

I found it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I went through the web.config file line by line.

When I originally set up my install of DNN I remember having problems, so I changed something in there that really no one talks about, but it is obviously used for the encrytion/decryption of the user accounts.

This line in the web.config file:
<add name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider" connectionStringName="SiteSqlServer" enablePasswordRetrieval="true" enablePasswordReset="true" requiresQuestionAndAnswer="false" minRequiredPasswordLength="7" minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters="0" requiresUniqueEmail="false" passwordFormat="Encrypted" applicationName="DotNetNuke" description="Stores and retrieves membership data from the local Microsoft SQL Server database"/>

I changed the "applicationName" value to the name of my LIVE server, thinking that would fix the problem that I had in the original install.  That did it.  When I changed that in the web.config file, I can now log in with the existing accounts.

Most people probably didn't change this value, which is why it isn't mentioned, but hopefully my dumb mistake helps someone else :-)

Thanks!

Just to ask how it is going to be with version 4.5...

Will there be some difficulties in upgrading from 4.4.1?
I have a site to open and don't know to wait 4.5 release or install 4.4.1 and then upgrade.

Thanks,
Ivan
