It's not the connectionstring. I've installed dnn4 on my local machine refering to the online database and it works fine., online doesn't work.

The difference between my local machine and my online machine is the version of my db, local is this MSSql 2005 , online machine is this MSsql200

Check you connection string. The connection string for SQL 2005 is different then the one for SQL 2000. This is noted in the web.config file.

Here is how I resolved the problem:

Since I am doing a new fresh install I was able to delete my current install without loosing any data and start over.

The places that I deviated from the instructions which may have caused problems where:

  • I did not explicitly reset the permissions on all files and folders in the folder where I unzipped the install package. You should do this.
  • I used the name of my server in the connection string rather then the IP address of the server.
  • I changed the default database of my SQL logon account to the DotNetNuke database that I created. You should leave this set to the default. i.e. the master db.
  • I also changed the install template in web.config to SmallBusiness.install.config. I was unable to get DNN up and running with this change even when I verified that the pervious errors were corrected. When I left the install template set to the default, DotNetNuke.install.config, and corrected the errors mentioned above I was able to get dnn up and running.

Hope this help with your situation.

I got this when I tried to install 3.3.2 and 4.3.2 at the same time, but if you have a slower machine you could also have this problems.  It appears that this is a timout issue and the Thread is being aborted because it thinks the process is deadlocked.  This is a .Net issues not a DNN issue. We have added quiet a few core modules and I think we are hitting a threshold on slower machines or machine that are doing other things while the install is being done.

I would do a clean install and this time move the all the modules except the HTMLText and Links module to another directory.  Then acceess the site and this time is should completed.  You can then copy the other modules back into the \install\module\ directory and run DNN using the following URL.

{your domain}/install/install.aspx?mode=InstallResources
