I have two test sites with a custom skin where the images are not displaying unless you log in.  I've checked the permissions on the page.  I've also checked the folder the images are in using the file manager. Permissions for "Open File in Folder" and "Browse Files in Folder" are set to "All Users". When I view the source and browse to the image location I'm taken to the login screen. Once logged in the image displays. The images were uploaded using the file manager and are in Portals/siteID#

This site was setup using the blank website. On a separate instance using the default install uploading images in the same way works as expected.

Since accessing the images directly doesn't work I think it must be some permissions issue and not a problem with the skin but I don't know where else to look besides the File Manager. File permissions at the OS level are the same as the site that works.

I'm new to DNN so any help is appriciated.

It's possible that the image itself has some custom attributes or permissions that are now requesting admin permissions when you try and download them from the server. So check that the image permissions have 'everyone' has 'Full Control' & also that they are not set as 'Hidden' in the file properties.

Thanks, adding everyone in the permissions list at the OS level makes the image visible without logging in. However I still haven't figured out why this is needed. I have other DNN sites on the same server that don't require this. The only difference is I used the blank website option to setup this site. I think it might have something to do with the application pool since that is the only difference I can find. I actually just started over with a new site but I'm still going to try figure this out just so I know what's going on. If I find a solution I'll post it here just in case someone else runs into the same situation.

Tried a brand new install on a brand new server with IIS 7.5 and same problem. If I give the IUSR account permissions to the image and css files it works correctly. However this is nowhere in the instructions and I'm wondering if I gave access to IUSR to to all of my DNN files wouldn't that be a security risk? I could also set the Anonymous access account to be the application pool identity but that seems like an even bigger risk since it has full access. I know the anonymous users still won't be able to see the aspx code or web.config files but I don't know what other files there are in dnn that I might be exposing.

Are there any best practices on using the IUSR account in DNN or using the application pool identity as the anonymous user? I haven't been able to find much on the subject and I'm new to DNN and IIS7.
