HTML skins are the "abstract" versions, that gets compiled during upload. Due to this mechanism, the compiler (than can be evoced manually by clicking "reparse skin"9 can react on core changes like moved controls, while ascx files need to be modified manually. Therefore I usually create a skin as html, load it up, do necessary tweaks in .ascx directly until it works and then update the html/xml accordingly.

I'm glad you posted this, because this is exactly what I did yesterday afternoon. I was having a hard time getting the html/xml to display correctly so I ftp'ed into my site, downloaded the .ascx file, tweeked it and got it to do what I wanted.

Thanks everyone for your advice!

this is how i make skins.

1. Make the skin in Photoshop. Cut it to pieces.

2. Copy the DNN-Blue folder

3. Change the folder name to DNN-MySkin

4. Modify it. inject photoshop images to appropriate position.

5. Tada-

HTML +XML = ascx... In both you need HTML knowledge. And contrary to perception, it is not necessary to learn XML for HTML skinning. Once you understand that it is simply a hierarchical configuration file, you are ready to go ahead.

So, HTML is actually easier for beginners and designers, as they are abstracted from the ascx. However a couple of weeks looking at what happens when an HTML file is parsed by the DNN skin engine will make evident that: An ascx file is an HTML file with some register directives added and Tokens replaced by Tags with attributes.
