I'd be surprised if it's anything to do with permissions. IME this message shows up when somehow you get a path with an invalid character in it.

I would look at the real name of the folder you are installing into. Anything weird or unusual?

Look at the name of your skin. That might be turned into a folder name. Anything weird or unusual?

Now this is the most bizarre thing. I went to log into the site this morning, and after changing the permissions on all folders (just set them at the root of the directory and then checked the box to inherit all child permissions from this object or whatever that says), received a brief 500: internal server error (no details from IE regardless of the fact that I have the custom errors mode set to off), but then I loaded the site a second time, and it loaded very quickly. Now, two questions. Why the 500 resolving itself, and then why did the site load remarkably quickly     ?
