My biggest issue is that the 9 upgrade took away the control bar (the admin bar you click "Edit Page" to edit module layouts) and replaced it with the Personna bar.

On my install, the personna bar is BORKED. It pops out the space on the left side but there is no content inside of it, just whitespace, hence I cannot use it for anything.

The control bar is also BORKED because it does not function. Clicking edit page does nothing so you cannot edit module settings or layout.

v9.0 looks like it was supposed to support both control bar and personna bar, 9.1 is personna bar only IIRC.

All I can say is good luck. I have spent 2 weeks trying to massage this site back into working order and it's not going well. Finding help here is spotty. Your mileage may vary.

Nelson, if you add a dependentAssembly with the following settings to your web.config file, the persona bar should no longer be blank:

assemblyIdentity:

name="Newtonsoft.Json"

publicKeyToken="30ad4fe6b2a6aeed"

culture="neutral"

bindingRedirect

oldVersion="0.0.0.0-7.0.0.0"

newVersion="7.0.0.0"

Why DNN can't fix such a minor glitch is beyond me!

I compared the web.config file from a site that upgraded correctly from 8.x to 9.x to the current site I am working on, which had the same error that you came up with (blank persona bar), among other things, and found a host of differences. Why? Only DNN Corp can explain, but they don't seem to be too interested in sorting this out for us plebs who can't afford their flagship Evoq product!

Anyway, even if you add the above dependentAssembly, you may still not have much joy because, if you have the same experience I am currently having, you will not be able to see all the SuperUser options in the persona bar menus. For me... Content menu - nothing at all; Manage menu - only Site Assets, Global Assets, Admin Logs and Security Analyzer; Settings menu - only Extensions, Custom CSS, Config Manager and About.

Right, I've figured out how to get the site I've been trying to upgrade working.

1. Backup site and database.
2. Upgrade to 8.0.4 first (if not already at this release... I was at 8.0.3 and the upgrade to 9.1.1 gave me the problems I mentioned previously, even after I made the changes to web.config).
3. Check that the upgrade worked as expected.
4. Backup site and database again.
5. Upgrade to 9.1.1 (note that every time I do this, the upgrade fails at 60% Installing Library - Telerik_09.01.01_Install.zip, but if I wait a couple of minutes and then Retry, the install completes).
6. Add the Newtonsoft dependentAssembly, as mentioned in my previous post.

Voila! It worked!!

Note that if you have a 3rd party skin on your site, it might be advisable to switch it to Xcillion (or Gravity) before you start the above process, and then revert to your 3rd party skin after the upgrade has succeeded. If something breaks, it is then likely to be an incompatibility issue between your 3rd party theme and DNN 9.

BTW, I also had to add the DNNImageHandler line under handlers in web.config because profile images were not working. I think this was a pre-existing problem with this site, though, so not an artifact of upgrading to 9.1.1. If you need it, though, the line is: add name="DnnImageHandler" path="DnnImageHandler.ashx" verb="*" type="DotNetNuke.Services.GeneratedImage.DnnImageHandler, DotNetNuke" preCondition="integratedMode"

Tried my next site upgrade, following the same steps that worked above... FAILED! Why am I not surprised? I have been using DNN/DotNetNuke since about 2006, and I can't recall EVER having an install OR a major upgrade work 100% first time. There's always something that has to be sorted, tweaked, manipulated, edited to restore missing data that the upgrade system neglected to do, etc. I have little bets with myself... how far will this upgrade get before failing. This time it was 52% Installing Module - DNNCE_Console_09.01.01_Install.zip.

Retry on the install page didn't work this time, so I tried to reload the site to kick the install process off again (after having to restart app pools, etc., because... DNN) and the site loaded (presumably without finishing various installs, as it had only gotten as far as 52%) but with the persona bar missing even more options than it was missing when I commented previously. In fact, I can only see Site Assets and Global Assets. The site appears to be working normally, but admin is now screwed.

So, back to the drawing board. Clearly, this upgrade to DNN 9 has some sort of random failure generator built in to keep us all guessing!

Why do I keep sticking with DNN instead of moving to other CMS packages that I've never had problems installing or upgrading? I don't know... maybe I'm just some sort of CMS masochist and I like to be whipped into submission by Mistress DNN!!
