I've looked through SnowCovered, can someone give me recommendations, tell me whether they've already used a particular module and if they liked it or not, thank you!

There are two ways of streaming media:

1) Using a media server software to stream a media. It uses special software and in most cases is used to stream real time content

2) Stream pre-recorded media files stored on your web server. This is the cheaper one and the easiest one. You only need to store your file anywhere on your server (Your portal space when talking about DNN) and use a streaming protocol when creating a URL

For example: if you have a file named file.asf, the normal way to create a URL for that file is:

http://yourserver.com/yourfolderpath/file.asf

You need to change the protocol (http) to a streaming protocol like

mms://yourserver.com/yourfolderpath/file.asf

You must understand that there are different protocols for each kind of file type.

You can start here:

http://www.washington.edu/computing/web/streaming/urls.html

http://all-streaming-media.com/articles/Streaming-Media-Intro_Streaming-protocols.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_media

Talking about specific DNN, you can use the normal link module, and if you need something more advanced, the file manager created by speerio.net is really good.

Hello Tim,

what will you streaming?  Will you do stream a file or will you do stream a live stream?  For streaming a file, you can use the media module.  For streaming a live stream like as an internet radio you need a Broadcasting stream Sever.

For live stream you can use Servers as Microsofts Media-Server, Icecast, or as a free a Shourtcast Server (there gives hosters too).  For information of shoztcast you can look at http://www.shoutcast.com

For a demostration as an Internet Redio that using DNN you can look to my german Page at http://www.moonlightradio.net .  At this time I am on planing a Module for DNN to show up the streaming information of a Shoutcast Server, as Song Title, DJ, ect.

Regards

Matthias

Hi tim,
if your talking about viewing the streams then have a look at http://www.viewtech.com.au

Go to the MultiMedia page.  You will see 2 modules that list different types of media.  On the left i have some media files that are hosted on my own site (its my tribute to italian footballers).

On the right side you will see a set of links for live TV & Radio streaming.  I use the media modules from http://www.inventua.com . The modules are on a "try before you buy" basis which is really cool for developers!...

Basically, when you click on one of the links, the url of the streaming location is passed to the media player & the magic just happens.  If it doesnt work, try downloading the latest media player & flash player.

ps.  The site is hosted on my laptop which goes to bed around midnight australia time (gmt+10).

cheers
John

Inventua do one that is relatively easy to configure. It's called Media Player on Snowcovered and there's a free trial that works without limitations. You will need to add media file extensions to your allowed file uploads in host settings before using it.

The latest core Media module also does the same job but without any configuration options.

Rob
