I latched onto one of Michael Washington's module creation tutorials (guestbook), where he uses a FormView (defaultmode of insert) for data entry, in this case a simple contact form. I added a bunch of fields, everything works great.

BUT...

All I'm trying to do is set some default values for some of the FormView fields when a user is logged in - first name, last name, country, region, etc. - when they go to fill out this contact form.

I've tried a dozen pieces of code to set some default dropdown and textbox values, and all have failed.

I'll name a next born after anyone who can shed some light.

Using formview seems kinda silly if you only use the INSERT view
Just use a real form, all your problems go away   sometime in the future you will thank yourself for wiring your BLL to your GUI manually

The form view looks great in theorie, but in practise it mostly means waisting several hours of time trying to figure out why MS *automagical voodoo control* isn't compatible with your idea of how a form should be like.

I agree with purple.

Microsoft's little server control is junk.  Manually wiring it is better in the long run.

Yeah, no doubt.

I went manual and haven't hit a roadblock yet.

I gotta' stop being drawn by silly shortcuts.
