Ok, so just upgrade your old site. Then transfer all the membership tables  aspnet_*, User* to the new clean install.  You can do this with DTS in Sql Server Enterprise Manager.

You can't change usernames this way, but you can do that in the DB easy enough.

This is a great utility to help get users imported. My challenge was mentioned in a separate post. But, I would like to see if the users of this import tool can shed some light on how to import users without passwords. I am using windows authentication and want to create the user accounts that already exist in Active Directory. I have the user ID, names and email addresses. But, I don't have access to the passwords.

When a user opens the site for the first time, IIS and windows authentication take over and create the account for the user and authorize the user without any input or registration from the user. The problem is that without user passwords, I can't use the ImportUsers.aspx utility. I always get an error from the utility that says '{username}' creation failed: InvalidPasswordUser.

I tinkered with the code in the .vb file and thought I could remove the statement for password parsing or make a null entry. But, obviously I don't know enough about the Membership API to make intelligent decisions about this. Any ideas?

Hi Christopher,

You could do that by generating a random password for each user.

An easy way to get a random string for the password is the Guid class in the .Net framework.

Change the line that asks for the password to use this:

password = System.Guid.NewGuid().ToString().Substring(0,7)

That last 7 will make the password 7 characters long, so you can change that to be whatever length you want. (1-36)

Mr, Mitchell,

I kindly thank you for your answer. If I do this, will it influence windows authentication to where users cannot log in to the site with their windows passwords?
