I am trying to install DNN on an XP pro machine for testing and learning purposes.  I was given "Building Websites with VB .NET and DotNetNuke 3.0" for a reference material, although it is outdated.  I configured the system as follows:

1)  Downloaded 4.3.7 DNN Install package

2)  Extracted the files to C:\DotNetNuke and mapped it as a virtual directory in IIS (with default.aspx as default document).

3)  Created a database named DotNetNuke in MS SQL Server 2005.

4)  Verified the webconfig paths were correct for the local database.

5)  Opened IE7 and entered hpp://localhost/DotNetNuke/

This is the response I keep getting:

The XML page cannot be displayed

Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

A name was started with an invalid character. Error processing resource 'http://localhost/DotNetNuke/'. Line 1, Position 2

All indications are that it is either a browser security setting or a corrupt XML file.  (googled it)
